We headed over to the lovely Hackney Studios to shoot a comparison between some of the black and white 35mm films available on the market.
Going into the shoot my favourite was easily HP5, which is incredibly diverse, being able to push it to 1600 without too much contrast or grain is a huge bonus to me. After seeing all the films side by side, HP5 is still the film i’m going to keep shooting, however Fomapan does look really nice, not quite as much latitude though. And Tri-X looks a lot nicer than all my previous images that i’ve shot with it. Retropan 320 is definitely an interesting film, i’m not sure if i’ll be using it very regularly, I am fond of the results, however the level of grain for a 320 speed film is a bit over the top for me.
I think that the scanning does play a big part in the image output, so i’ve added two different galleries, one with some images scanned in on the Imacon, and then a few done at home on my Epson V600, which is no where near the same output, but definitely more affordable.
